How to Use the Documents Module

Complete step-by-step guide for uploading, organizing, and using AI with project documents in Mastt

The Documents module is your central hub for managing all project files in Mastt — contracts, invoices, reports, and more. This guide walks you through uploading files, previewing and organizing them, applying filters, using bulk actions, and enabling AI features so you can chat directly with your documents.

Before You Start

  • Files must be marked as AI Ready before you can chat with them — this is a separate step from uploading
  • Deletions are permanent and apply for everyone on the project, so confirm your selection carefully before using bulk delete

Accessing the Documents Module

  1. From your Home page, open the project you want to work in.
  2. In the left navigation bar, click Documents.
  3. You'll land on the All Files view — the central hub for every project file.

Uploading Files

Upload by Drag and Drop

  1. Drag files from your computer anywhere onto the All Files page.
  2. Each file will begin processing individually.

Upload Using the Add File Button

  1. Click the Add File button in the top right.
  2. Select one or more files from your computer.
  3. Click Open to begin uploading.

When files are first uploaded, they are marked as Unclassified. A classification tag — such as Contract, Invoice, or Report — is applied only after you mark the file as AI Ready (see Enabling AI Features below).

Previewing Files

  1. Click on any file name.
  2. A preview panel opens on the right-hand side.
  3. Use the available controls to review the file:
    • View the classification tag and AI Ready status at the top
    • Click Ask AI to open the Mastt AI Assistant with this document loaded (if the file is AI Ready), or click Make AI Ready to prepare the document first
    • Click Download to save a copy of the file to your computer
    • Zoom in and out
    • Navigate through pages on multi-page documents
    • Resize the panel by dragging the edge
    • Close the panel using the X in the top corner

Mastt renders PDFs, Excel files, and Word documents directly in the preview panel, so you can review them without downloading.

Organizing Files into Folders

Create a New Folder

  1. Click New Folder in the top right.
  2. Enter a name for the folder.
  3. Click Create. The folder appears in your file list with a count of the items inside.

Move a File Into a Folder

  1. Click on the file row, or click the Action button next to the file.
  2. Select Move to.
  3. Choose your destination folder and confirm.

You can also drag and drop a file directly onto a folder — this is usually faster when moving just a couple of files.

Move a File Out of a Folder

  1. Open the folder, then click on the file row or click the Action button next to the file.
  2. Select Move to.
  3. Choose All Files as the destination and confirm.

Filtering and Finding Files

  1. Click the Filter button in the top right.
  2. Choose filters such as Document Type, AI Status, or what the file is attached to.
  3. Stack filters together for more specific results — for example, showing only Contracts that are AI Ready.

Downloading and Deleting Files

  1. Click on the file row, or click the Action button next to the file.
  2. Choose Download or Delete.
  3. Confirm the action if prompted.

Using Bulk Actions

Select Multiple Files

  1. Check the boxes next to each file you want to action.
  2. To select everything at once, use the checkbox in the header row. Folders can also be included in your selection.

Run a Bulk Action

  1. Once files are selected, the bulk action bar appears.
  2. Choose from the available actions:
    • Move multiple files into a folder
    • Download the selection as a ZIP file
    • Delete the selected files

Delete removes everything selected in one go. Always double-check your selection before confirming.

Enabling AI Features

Mark a File as AI Ready

  1. Click on the file row or click the Action button next to the file.
  2. Select Mark AI Ready.
  3. The file enters a Processing state. Once complete, an AI Ready badge with a green indicator appears, and the file's classification tag (e.g. Contract, Invoice, Report) replaces the Unclassified label.Processing time varies depending on the file, but usually only takes a few moments.Processing time varies depending on the file, but usually only takes a few moments.

Chat With a Document

  1. Open the file preview.
  2. Click Ask AI at the top.
  3. The Mastt AI Assistant opens with your document loaded alongside.
  4. Ask questions such as "What are the key dates in this contract?" or "Summarize this invoice."

The AI responds based on the contents of your document, which is useful for quickly pulling out key information without reading the full file.

Troubleshooting and FAQs

Q: Why is my file still showing as Unclassified?

Classification is applied when a file is marked as AI Ready — it doesn't happen automatically on upload. Click the file row, select Mark AI Ready, and the classification tag will appear once processing completes.

Q: I've accidentally deleted a file — can it be recovered?

Deletion is final and cannot be reversed.

Q: Can I chat with more than one document at a time?

Currently, you can only chat with a single document per chat.
